American grilling, Japanese flavors: That’s the irresistible idea behind The Japanese Grill. In this bold cookbook, chef Tadashi Ono and writer Harris Salat, avid grillers, both share a key insight: that live-fire cooking marries perfectly with mouthwatering Japanese ingredients like soy sauce and miso.
Packed with fast-and-easy recipes, versatile marinades, and step-by-step techniques, The Japanese Grill will have you grilling amazing steaks, pork chops, salmon, tomatoes, and whole chicken, as well as traditional favorites like yakitori, yaki onigiri, and whole salt-packed fish. Whether you use charcoal or gas, or are a grilling novice or disciple, you will love dishes like Skirt Steak with Red Miso, Garlic–Soy Sauce Porterhouse, Crispy Chicken Wings, Yuzu Kosho Scallops, and Soy Sauce-and-Lemon Grilled Eggplant. Ono and Salat include menu suggestions for sophisticated entertaining in addition to quick-grilling choices for healthy weekday meals, plus a slew of delectable sides that pair well with anything off the fire. When I got this book to review, the first thing I thought about was how it will be great to share some Japanese recipes with my son, Matthew. He traveled around the world last year with Semester at Sea and loved the food that he tried in Japan. I know he’ll love this book with it’s simple recipes and large, beautiful photos! Click HERE for the full list of recipes.
I have tried three different recipes from this book so far.

Porterhouse with Garlic-Soy Sauce Marinade
This was delicious! It was done perfectly…just a little pink the way I like it! We loved the marinade! It was nice to finally make a good steak on the grill! I’m going to follow their grilling directions from now on, so I don’t overcook our steaks!

Foil-Baked Green Beans with Soy Sauce and Garlic
This was a nice change from our usual veggies! It’s so easy to throw together and there’s no pans to clean afterwards!

Ginger-Garlic Half Chicken
For this recipe, I used kitchen shears to cut a whole chicken in half. The chicken came out way more tender and juicy than my every day barbecued chicken!
I can see that this cookbook is going to keep me busy at the grill this summer. (Which is a good thing because I tend to barbecue the same things and I need to shake it up a bit!) If you’re a fan of Japanese food and simple recipes, I highly recommend this cookbook!

Hmm… I’m not sure what Foil-Baked Edamame would be. Oh, I’m familiar with edamame, but to bake it in foil..? I want to see what else goes into it. That could be fun!
Of course, the classics always sound good, like Grilled Chicken Breast Teriyaki. Seriously, who doesn’t love Chicken Teriyaki, and who wouldn’t love another recipe to give variety to a favorite take-away dish, cooked at home instead!
I think I’d love to try the Zucchini with Shiso and Olive Oil and the grilled chicken looks awesome (that you did above). I really need to see the ingredients before I’d decide as I can’t have soy so it might be difficult to pick out recipes to try - plus I’ve never had Japanese so I don’t know what all the terms are.
