How to Cook a Turkey Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

I’ve been preparing Thanksgiving Dinner at my house for about 10 years.  It’s my favorite dinner to cook, but it can be overwhelming.  I’m usually responsible for cooking a 24 lb. turkey, bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, mashed turnip, creamed onions, pumpkin pie, and usually cookies for the kids. My advice:  If people offer to bring a dish or two, take them up on it!  It will make the day run a lot more smoothly for you.  With Thanksgiving coming up, this will be the perfect cookbook to help and inspire you in the kitchen.

This cookbook (from the Editors and Contributors of Fine Cooking) includes:

  • All the basics - Which bird to buy (Fresh? Natural? Premium?)…how big a bird…how big the pan…to brine or not to…why buy an extra breast… trussing… basting…making sure the turkey is done…more
  • Traditional roast turkey and turkeys with a twist, like Maple-Bacon Glazed with Bourbon Gravy
  • Stuffings that nearly steal the limelight…Cornbread Pecan, Apples, Bacon & Caramelized Onion, Sauerkraut & Rye Bread, more
  • Sides certain to start new traditions - pass the Purée of Yukon Gold Potatoes with Parmesan and Cranberry-Pear Salsa, please!
  • Festive starters (Herb-Marinated Olives with Fennel & Orange Zest, Wild Rice & Mushroom Soup with Almonds, much more) and fitting finishes (new takes on perennially favorite pies plus cakes, crisps, more)
  • Step-by-step techniques…follow the pictures to carve gracefully, make sublime gravies, roll out pie crust like a pro, more
  • Turkey riddles solved at last! What exactly are giblets anyway? And when is stuffing dressing?

I can always use more ideas for side dishes, so I decided to test out the following recipes.

Sauteed Asparagus with Butter & Parmesan

This is easy, quick, and delicious!  Asparagus is one of the few vegetables I can get the whole family to eat.  I will definitely be making this again!

Smashed Red-Skinned Potatoes with Boursin & Scallions

Okay, this picture doesn’t do it justice.  (I had the camera on the wrong setting.)  But these potatoes were Y-U-M-M-Y!  They were so easy too!  I didn’t even need to take out the hand mixer.  :)  Dave and I loved them.  I will definitely make them again!

How to Cook a Turkey and All the Other Trimmings includes the following chapters:

Appetizers

Soup, Salads & Cranberry Sauce

Turkey, Stuffing & Gravy

Vegetables

Potatoes & Grains

Pies & Tarts

Desserts

Continuing the Feast

So what do I give this new cookbook?

I LOVE this cookbook!  It has a wonderful mixture of traditional Thanksgiving recipes as well as some great new recipes.  The photos are absolutely gorgeous!

Our “must haves” are turkey & dressing (Southern style with a mix of corn and white breads….my mom’s recipe, but it never quite tastes like hers), mashed potatoes and gravy. We vary the veggies and desserts, but these are standards.

My favorites (and usually the one’s I am assigned to make) are the sweet potatoes, the rolls, the gravy, the mashed potatoes, and I usually carve (piece apart) the turkey! That way I can munch all my favorite pieces while I’m doing it! 😉 This year I am determined to try actually COOKING the turkey myself! EXCITING!

My grandmother and I always made the oyster dressing. I still love to make it an imagine her hands are next to mine blending the bread, eggs, and other ingredients together

What has to be part of the Thanksgiving meal for our family is stuffing , turkey , peas, mashed potatoes and something that includes pumpkin which is usually my homemade pumpkin crisp.

We usually deep fry a turkey and then to all the traditional dishes for Thanksgiving. However my husband will be away this year and I’ll have to cook a turkey the old fashioned way - in the oven - because I’m not allowed to use his fryer - lol.

Thanksgiving dinner is always at my house with our family traditional dinner that I cook. Turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, rice, greens, potato souffle, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, yeast rolls, iced tea, and pound cake. All made from scratch.

My favorite is a sweet potato casserole with a pecan brittle on top. Sooooo much better than the melted marshmallows!
    And pecan pie, always.

I like to make the candied yams and yummy fruity jell-o as well as green bean casserole and fun chocolate pilgrim cookies. Turkey is good but I love all the sides! I would love to win this cookbook!
