Oh My Gosh! I’m in College, and I Never Learned to Cook!
About the Book
You raise your children well, feed them nutritiously for almost two decades, and then send them off to college. They survive their first year through the grace of the college cafeteria. But what’s for dinner when they get their first apartment. That’s when it hits them: Oh My Gosh! I’m In College and I Never Learned To Cook!
The call comes, ‘Mom I don’t know how to cook…’ When Hollis Ledbetter’s third daughter called from college expressing the same concern as her two older sisters, it inspired her to write this culinary handbook for students. Whatever your child’s college major, there’s one course they need most and likely won’t find it offered in any of the class listings; a basic cooking course.
Oh My Gosh! I’m In College and I Never Learned To Cook! contains simple directions to prepare savory, economical, student-approved recipes. Helpful hints entice and transform kitchen-challenged college students into accomplished cooks. OMG is filled with tangy, humorous illustrations by Hollis’ mother, artist Ann Sample. Oh My Gosh! I’m In College and I Never Learned To Cook! whips up all these ingredients into a cherished recipe sure to whet your student’s appetite for cooking and sustain it for years to come.
Review
Our oldest son (Matthew) just graduated from college and our youngest son (Andrew) will be going away to college next year, so I guess you could say I was a little curious about this cookbook. I found that Matthew enjoyed the campus food the first year of school, but it soon got old after that. He was used to heating food up at home, but never followed any recipes until he was in college. During the cold winters on campus, Matthew started cooking some meals with his friends so he wouldn’t have to go out in the bad weather. Eventually, he rented a house with his friends and he prepared more sophisticated meals.
I imagine the same thing will happen with Andrew. He warms things up in the microwave or oven and that’s the extent of it. I’m glad to have this book for Andrew next year. It has simple breakfast, brunch, dinner, and dessert recipes that I’m sure he can make. There’s a great variety of chicken, salad, and sandwich recipes that I know Andrew would love!
I had some ripe bananas to use up, so I made the Low Fat Banana Nut Bars on page 85. They tasted just like banana bread! I loved them! I can picture college girls making these for a little sweet fix. No blender needed!
When your child goes away to college, be sure to pack this cookbook with his/her belongings. There will come a day when cafeteria food just doesn’t cut it and they’ll want to make something homemade.

Those look delicious Jane. Let us know what Andrew decides to make? I think you and Andrew should vlog about his first recipe! (Really put the cookbook to the test!) lol It does sound like a great book with easy to fix recipes for college kids. They need that!
What a great idea! The banana bars look awesome…wish I could have a bite with my morning coffee today! No doubt, your boys will get some good use from this great collection.
I work at a college and see this type of thing all the time. This is one of the reasons students put on weight their first couple years because they dont know how to prepare healthy meals and depend on the “all you can eat” chow hall for their food. Thanks for this review it was very helpful.
When I was in college - in the stone age - we had one tiny kitchen for a dorm of 150+ kids. It was the perfect excuse for all the kids not to cook.
My daughter just started college this year and since I’ve been cooking since I could reach the stove, I’ve done my best to teach her. I failed. Miserably. Don’t know WHERE I failed. LOL This book seems to be just GREAT! I’ve NOT given up. Gonna have to get her this!
