THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER!

Last year I posted these pictures of my family enjoying our Thanksgiving dinner.

That’s Dave and me in the front.  We set up 2 banquet tables in the living room.  I usually cook a stuffed 26 - 28 lb Butterball turkey.  Here’s my Bread Stuffing recipe!  The recipe comes from Dave’s side of the family and it’s been in the family for years.  I usually make the mashed potatoes, gravy, mashed turnip, boiling onions, butternut squash, pumpkin pie, and cookies.  My sister-in-law Kristy brings everyone’s favorite Apple Squares! If you don’t snatch one of them up quick, you’re out of luck!  They’re the best!  We also beg my sister-in-law Diana to bring her spicy asparagus dish every year!  My mom and sisters bring a dessert and we’re all well fed for days!

Here are my two boys.  Matthew (22) on the left and Andrew (17) on the right.

Even though I’ve been cooking a large turkey for ten years, I still forget how long it needs to be cooked when it’s stuffed.  So I always refer to the Butterball Calculators and Conversions page.  I type in how many pounds of turkey (stuffed) and it gives me the correct amount of time to cook it.  I swear I use this every year and it has not failed me yet!

Look what I have for two of you!

Two of my readers will be chosen to win a coupon to save up to $15.00 on a

fresh or frozen Butterball turkey!

Not sure which turkey is right for your family?  Check out this video!

The one item to have besides Turkey is a dish called Pink Artic Freeze. I have been making this since junior high Home Ec. class.

My very first year I made a turkey on my own I remembered to clean out the cavity of the bird, however I never knew the gizzards and liver were at the other end. Needless to say they got cooked (in their pouch) with the stuffed bird! I’ve learned my lesson since then 🙂

Every Thanksgiving my family has to have a custard pie because that was my Grandfathers favorite kind of pie. He has been gone for about 13 years now but we still get a custard pie for him every year. Traditions make the holidays warmer!

The family and I wake up early Thanksgiving morning and run a 5K for charity (helps us work off all the extra calories we are about to consume) and then come home to begin cooking our feast. I always make sweet potato pie rather than pumpkin pie. It is a great time with family.

Its a funny tradition, but it wasn’t meant to be….and unfortunately, it doesn’t include food! When I was little, I used to sneak out of the room and start playing the piano right as the dishes needed to be cleared and washed. No one would bother me because my parents LOVED the fact that I was playing without being asked. Now, even at 38, whenever we gather, it is still the routine, or tradition, I sit down at the piano and entertain while my sisters clear the table! It was a wonderful gig! Oh….and mom’s pumpkin pies were an ablsolute must! She’s even been asked to donate them for an auction fundraising event where they fetched $500!

Our family dressing/stuffing recipe is a little different. It is a really old recipe that came from a woman who used to work in my great grandmother’s home. It calls for a mixture of ground pork sausage and ground beef, celery, onion, and sage and bread chunks. It’s delicious but not the type of dressing/stuffing most people eat. It’s a chore to make it but I’d be sad if we didn’t. I grew up eating this one 🙂

We eat traditional food during Yhanksgiving. But with my Italian heritage and my husband’s Norwegian heritage, we bring some of those foods together. We make potato lefse for the bread and risotto from my Italian roots. you add in aal the traditional favorites and the table runneth over.

It’s a time for remembering Thanksgivings past and passing on those traditions. WE all gather in the kitchen because it’s the best room in the house!

Butterball Turkeys have been a tradition in my family since I was a kid and my grandmother hosted Thanksgiving! And we love to serve it with a cornbread dressing that includes pecans (maybe that’s a southern thing.) Of course, we have Candied Yams and Heavenly Hash, too. And my grandmother’s secret recipe for Sweet Potato Pie! (She passed that on to me, and, some day, I will pass it on to my daughter and daughter-in-law.)

I like to have the whole meal very traditional. Traditional recipes with nothing added. I feel like that’s what makes Thanksgiving. I’m not one to say “I think I will try stuffing with green chilis in it this year”. That is fun, but for Thanksgiving I like to stick to what always was.

A must is our traditional Corn Soup. We dry corn which we have cut of the cob in the summer. For holidays we then rehydrate it and turn it into a rich, nutty, cram and butter based soup.

Yowza! What a great giveaway!!! We don’t do a whole lot for Thanksgiving. We always had to switch houses each year between parents so there wasn’t a lot of consistency. But now that I’m older I always make the green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. We love it!

I always have to have a turkey! We have changed and modified the side dishes over the years depending on which side of the family we are eating with, and my sister going gluten free after discovering a wheat allergy, but we ALWAYS have a turkey. We have roasted in the oven, then deep fried, and for the past couple of years my husband has smoked it. But whatever way we prepare it, it is always on the table.

One of our family favorite traditions is after dinner we all gather to make “turkey” cookies. We trace our hands on paper, cut out the shape on cookie dough and bake. But the best part of the cookies is decorating them. We use edible markers and on the feathers (fingers) we write things we are thankful for, and then add color with different color frosting to make them look like turkey’s. We always have a blast making these cookies together!

We must have cranberry sauce and stuffing as well as turkey of course. We generally eat in the afternoon and later in the evening we always make turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce sandwiches….yummy! I think I look forward more to the sandwiches than anything else.

The day before Thanksgiving is pie day. I make 2-3 homemade pumpkin pies, and the occasional chocolate cream or French apple upon request. On thanksgiving day I wake up early and put in the turkey. I like to turn on the parade and listen to holiday music to stay in the spirit while making the sides. Rolls, cranberry sauce, corn, pink salad, and mashed potato casserole!

Since we’ve moved to our new home, Thanksgiving has been at our house. My teen daughter and I cook together for days…it’s the thing I look forward to all year. We get out my grandmother’s china, and this year I’ll be using my mother’s crystal for the first time. Sides always change, but we always have turkey and ham since my father in law has an allergy to poultry
