This is a Romertopf Bread Baker. Notice that the inside of the baker is glazed.
The Idea Behind This Bakeware
The secret to these bread bakers lies in the specially selected porous clays that are used to create these unglazed pieces of baking cookware. Their ability to absorb a specific amount of water is the key to this unique cooking process. Before use, these bread bakers must be soaked in water for five to ten minutes after which the dough can be placed in the clay baker that then goes into the oven. As the clay is heated the water molecules turn to steam, which then cooks the dough producing an exceptionally moist, fragrant and tasty loaf of bread.
After soaking the baker for five to ten minutes simply add the dough and place the baker into a cold oven and then set to 400 degrees. There is no need for any further attention simply return when the time is up to find a perfectly baked loaf of bread. The moisture keeps the bottom of the bread baker at about 220 degrees making burning virtually impossible.
standard bread baker measures 7 1/2” x 9 1/4”
French/Italian baker measures 4” X 13”
round loaf baker is 11” in diameter
four piece mini baker measures 4 1/4” x 3 1/2” each
I tested out the bread baker using a bread mix that I had on hand. I soaked the bread baker for 10 minutes before I added the dough.
I baked the bread as directed on the box.
The bread released from the pan easily and was moist and delicious!
I had some ripe bananas, so I also made a Banana Bread.
Again, the bread released from the pan nicely and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
I love the idea of soaking the bread baker so it will produce a moist bread and you can’t beat the unique design. This clay baker will get a lot of use in my kitchen! I definitely give this bread baker two thumbs up!

I am just so intrigued now. That baked a beautiful loaf of bread! Of course, I’m sure you had something to do with it too. 🙂

Sounds like a great product. I never seem to have luck making homemade breads, though. I always end up burning it or undercooking it for some reason. Maybe I just need a pan like this.

Our favorite is the romertopf 113, it’s huge and can feed our large family. You can also cook smaller meals in it too. We used to have the romertopf 111, but we out grew it over a few years. We cook in it nearly every Sunday night. It’s a great tradition.
