Keep Hunger at Bay While Running Errands With These Snacks

Let’s face it: you’re a mom who practically spends hours or most of your day in your car.  Whether you’re commuting to work, rushing to various activities for your children, or waiting around until school is over, you’re in your car most of the day.  On top of that, it’s likely your kids are in the car as much or nearly as much as you are.  Maybe you end up being a taxi mom because you realize that it’s easier to get things done and arrive to places on time if you just wait in your car rather than going home when you have an hour break between errands, activities, and work.

When you’re in the car most of the day, you’re most likely eating out of the car.  Fast-food wrappers and empty fruit snack packages are common items found on the floor of your van.  And as much as you wish you could go home and eat a real meal or have your kids eat healthy food like fresh fruit, you don’t have time to stop at home or at the store.  Instead, you’re looking on the floor or in the crevasses of your minivan for something to munch on.  You spot leftover treats from Halloween or the half open chips from your child’s school lunch.  Sometimes, you find yourself resorting to eating that half-eaten chicken nugget that your little one left in the car seat—it’s OK to admit to the half-eaten chicken nugget.  We’ve all done it.

Remember the advice to have a 72-hour kit of emergency essentials in the event of a natural disaster?   Well, you need a kit like that in the event of running errands all day and unable to eat a real meal until you get home late.   When you’re in the car all day, you’re going to get hungry.   Your kids are going to get hungry.   And when they start complaining, and you still don’t have time to go back home to get a meal, you’re going to go through the drive-thru.  But if you keep doing this, you’ll soon realize that fast food isn’t always going to be the best option—it will eat up your budget and it will also ruin the kids’ appetite for dinner.   Sometimes your kids just need that little snack to fuel their energy for that after school soccer practice or piano lesson.

For the parents who find themselves eating out of their vehicles more than they want to admit, it’s a good idea to create a kit of healthy snacks to keep in the car.  Most of the time, your kid or you doesn’t need a full meal from a fast-food place.  All you or your kid needs is a snack that keeps hunger at bay.  So instead of going through the fast food lane when you feel the hunger pains or when your children are complaining, you can reach for this kit.  Here’s what to stock up on:

Rice cakes: This snack can help fuel energy and satisfy hunger thanks to the fiber content.  Rice cakes are low in sugar and calories, which also make it a healthy snack.  In addition, they hold up well being left in the car, so you don’t have to worry about how long they are kept in your vehicle.

Protein or breakfast bars: If you find yourself always skipping breakfast because you have an early-morning commute, then stocking up your car with protein bars is the best bet.  Also, a protein bar is a good snack for fueling your kid before heading out to soccer practice.  Want to create your own breakfast bar that also satisfies your cookie craving?  Try this Just Cookie Dough Breakfast Bars recipe from hamptoncreek.

Almonds: If there could be a poster child of healthy snacks in the car, it would be almonds.  They are a classic healthy snack loaded with many essential nutrients and vitamins.  Keeping a handful in the car can help you manage your hunger pains while sitting in the car during a long commute or a day of running errands.

So let’s break out of the grazing-for-snacks-on-the-floor-of-the-car behavior for the sake of our health and our children.  Even with a busy lifestyle where you’re driving or waiting in your vehicle most of the day, these tips give you ideas of snacks that you can keep in your car, health on track, and hunger at bay.
