Book Review: Stop Dieting and Start Losing Weight

Stop Dieting and Start Losing Weight

By Jen Brewer, RD

I’ve always tried to keep my weight under a certain number on the scale, but as I get older, it is definitely more of a challenge and being a food blogger certainly doesn’t help.  When I’m testing out recipes for a cookbook review, my husband and I have a few treats and I bring the rest to work so we don’t eat the whole plate.  If my pants start to get tight, I try to cut back.  I refuse to buy a larger pant size.  When I really want to lose a few pounds, I’ll keep a food diary on my cell phone and count calories.  This helps me to make better food choices.

Honestly, I would love to lose about 5 lbs. so when I was approached to review Jen Brewer’s new book Stop Dieting and Start Losing Weight, I was excited to learn some new tips and tricks to eat more healthy.

When this book arrived in the mail,  I just about read it cover-to-cover in one sitting.  It’s super easy to read, informative, and sensible.  I agreed with everything I read, I just tend to get side tracked by stress, lack of meal planning, or not making time to exercise.  It would help to read through these tips and tools now and then to help stay on track better.

A few sections of the book that hit home for me is eat by volume, slow down when you eat, drink more water, plan menus, and shop for food deliberately. I’m going to work on this! :)

If you’d like to lose weight, I’d say this book is a great place to start.  It’s a sensible approach to making better choices for a lifetime and not about depriving yourself like some diets out there.

There is less than 140 pages, so it’s a quick read and a great little book to get you motivated to eat better and lose weight.

Hey Jane. This sounds like a good book with practical advice about making permanent changes - which is the only way to lose and keep it off. I just started using My Fitness Pal again and am counting calories. It really is harder the older we get, unfortunately. Keep up the good work, sounds like you are on your way to losing those stubborn last few pounds. I personally would love to lose 20 lbs.!
